The short films that the participants composed included success stories of how women challenge social obstacles to enhance their role in the Palestinian society.
PROMOTING COMMUNITY AWARENESS THROUGH SHORT FILMS
The Palestinian Association for Empowerment and Local Development- REFORM, carried out a training workshop on making short films with the participation of fifteen young men and women as part of the “Fostering Social inclusion and gender equality within Palestinian society through tackling gender stereotypes” project. Its aim is to develop and build the capacity of young women in making short films. It also seeks to enable them to shed light on community issues that limit the active participation of women in the Palestinian society through cinematography, and to take part in promoting community awareness to reduce the exclusionary practices that women face.
PORTRAYING WOMEN’S OBSTACLES THROUGH A LENS
The training session started by introducing the participants to the components of short films such as, screenwriting, photography, lighting, montage, and a production team. The training included a set of examples and practical applications that were illustrated and worked on to provide the trainees with the mechanisms to make short films.
During the training, participants were divided into three small working groups. Each group selected a case and defined the characters. Then they took part in screenwriting, filming and producing films through highlighting the social issues that women experience. These short films include success stories that embody the role of women in challenging social obstacles along with enhancing their role in society.
ABOUT THE PROJECT
The project aims to counter discriminatory and exclusionary practices and attitudes that contribute to gender inequality. This can be achieved by providing safe spaces for marginalized groups, particularly women and youth, discussing gender-based societal issues, and improving the exchange of experiences among the various Palestinian community components to enhance social cohesion.
