CINEMA CLUB: WOMEN DEFEATING THE ODDS

The participants engaged in an open discussion about the sustainable development and cultural diversity that would result from women’s participation in the Palestinian society.

NARROW-MINDEDNESS AND ITS IMPACT ON WOMEN’S ROLE IN SOCIETY

The Palestinian Association for Empowerment and Local Development- REFORM, conducted a cultural session to screen and discuss the documentary film entitled: “When Necessary”, at the Women’s Center Hall in Al-Amari Camp, to shed light on the reality of women in marginalized areas and review the main challenges that they face. A number of activists, young women and men, from Al Amari camp and its surrounding areas participated in this session as a part of the “Fostering social inclusion and gender equality within Palestinian society through tackling gender stereotypes” project.
“When Necessary” highlighted the issue of the husbands’ narrow-mindedness and their refusal for their wives to work due to religious or societal perspectives related to customs and traditions. Also, it shed light on the choices that women are forced to make, whether accepted or rejected, and the negative repercussions of these options that may lead to the disintegration of the family.

RESTRICTIONS ON WOMEN’S FREEDOM

This documentary film portrayed the extent of the negative impact of men’s rejection towards women’s active role in society. It explained the magnitude to which deeply engrained intellectual and educational patterns in Palestinian society limit and control the lives of various family members and society as a whole.
The screening came as an awareness training activity for the youth affiliated with the project, which relied on open discussion and exchange of views and experiences to increase their involvement in in-depth analytical processes of social challenges. In addition, it provided them with tools to transform and remove restrictions associated with cultural and structural systems. Additionally, it raised their awareness of the significance of women’s participation in Palestinian society along with its positive impact on achieving sustainable development and cultural diversity.

ABOUT THE PROJECT

The project aims to counter the discriminatory practices and attitudes that contribute to the promotion of gender inequality, provide safe spaces for youth, including women and refugees, encourage discussions regarding gender-based societal issues, and improve the exchange of experiences between various Palestinian community components to enhance social cohesion.
